Camera Canon EOS C300 Sophisticated

The C300 is a bold "genetic" cross the camcorder Canon XF305 (MXF format) and the Canon 5 d Mark II (EF interchangeable optics), but with a new Super 35 mm sensor that works wonders in low light. But the competition is tough and the requirements of as many professionals as varied. It must be said that the C300 is a challenger on the segment of "cheap" digital cinema cameras.

The C300 is equipped with a CMOS sensor in definition 4K (8.29 million effective pixels) size Super 35 mm, but filming in HDTV 1080 only. It is in direct competition with the Sony PMW - F3 which also has a Super 35 mm sensor and filmed in 4:2:0 format MPEG-2 Long GOP, but also with the new Red Scarlet-X camera that filmed records actually in 4K.

This table shows that the C300 is the most expensive in the trio. But looking more closely, Canon C300 is not badly positioned, especially thanks to its accessories supplied as standard:

-a wide 10 cm excellent 1.23 megapixel resolution diagonal LCD screen,
-a swivel viewfinder (color/black-and-white) 1.55 megapixels,
-a removable handle,
-a butt of wrist.
-a battery BP-955

These elements are optional in the Scarlet-X, sold with the same arsenal, will cost you at least 13 000 dollars.

On the other hand, RAW format and the Scarlet-X 4K resolution require a post-production very muscular and very expensive. Ascent 4K files on its station with the same fluidity as an MXF file in 1080. One thus realizes that if the purchase price of a "bare" Scarlet is lower that a C300, the final invoice of the 4K workflow is far superior, not to mention the cost of much more expensive than a Compact Flash memory SSD modules.

There remains the question of diffusion: where plans are in 4K in 2012? For now, movie theaters are not scrambling to invest in 4 K projection equipment, domestic TVs are developing and Internet starts just to the HD video streamer. In some regions of the world, production in SD is even still in force. the CMOS sensor built into the C300 is responsible for much of the final price. It is a Super 35 mm (24.6 x 13.8 mm) sensor, which operates 8.3 million pixels to treat spectrum RGB video (4 million green dots, 2 million blue points) and 2 million Red points. By a simple grouping of photodiodes, the sensor creates a pixel coloured without interpolation to produce a Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel image. This system allows to limit the appearance of moiré and aliasing is found for example with the Canon 5 d Mark II and its 21 megapixels (subsampling) sensor.
